Labour markets are being revolutionized and taken over by machines. Encryption technology will control us all. And only those individuals or companies with special knowledge and skills will wield unprecedented powers. The nomadic lifestyle is becoming popular with advantages and disadvantages. And this is the biggest lifestyle change in ten thousand years. the best way to put it, is this quote by Dr Kevin Warwick Professor of cybernetics, at Reading University :

” In contemplating the next millennium we should prepare ourselves for a society in which a more intelligent life form other than ourselves will exist”.

Human’s have the inate capacity to transform digital labour to digital work. We are experiencing a true social media revolution during coronvirus lockdown. Digital work is not only  the organization of human experiences with the help of the human brain, digital media and speech in such a way that new products are created.

How Artificial Intelligence is Changing the Work Force

This section explores the political and economic implications of digital culture on sharing economies and labour behaviour. What I want to call attention to, are the overviews of the sharing economy. Also suggestions that boundaries are being set by the digital systems, and not by the individuals. For example, Mark Zukkenberg’s sharing economy on Facebook promotes Integrity, FOR him. In contrast, it is also an assault on individual privacy and anonymous comments on blogs are both examples of anti-human software policies. In the digital culture environment a lot of time is spent on Facebook, Twitter, reading blogs or watching You Tube. This leaves certain factors to think about? Such as..

  1. Are we getting free cloud services for being spied?
  2. We are not getting paid but we are paying for bandwidth?
  3. What is prevalent is fluke commerce for few people, who have become rich overnight, and there is no support for the middle class.
  4. Are copyright enforcement across digital culture a remix or mash-up culture?
  5. Appropriation and reusing are entwined and the message is unclear whether it is personal or appropriation.  So, it is for the individuals to internalize first what and how he wants to appropriate?
  6. Is not Facebook an assault on our privacy and breach of anonymity laws?
  7. Are not the engineers designing the digital culture as all one culture?  Is not the social principal in the human world  becoming lazy! (Lanier, 2011, pp. 194-195)

As a matter of fact, it is for the reader to answer the questions above, and then analyze it at a personal level. For Digital Labour, sharing economy the individual is parting with his skill for no monetary value. Although, it may be true that the audience are giving up their free time by spending it on social media in order to enhance their creativity and self-esteem. It should not be that the digital economy puts the individual in a zombie mindset. It is therefore not to be overlooked: as creating a false personality in a sharing economy can be consequential. Thus, from a subjective stance, wearing your heart on the sleeve, and the goodwill of sharing with others or spreading opinions and emotive likes and shares can also hamper the seriousness of the individual. So, care and balance about how business is conducted on social media should be crossing your mind by now.

The Mind, Dry Mind, and Wet Mind

In the previous section, I raised a few questions and the answers were subjective. In this section we go a notch higher from a functional perspective the ‘mind.’ As the ‘mind’ is what the brain does!

Humans have the innate capacity to transform digital labour to digital work. We are experiencing a true social media revolution during the coronavirus lockdown. Digital work is not only the organization of human experiences with the help of the human brain, digital media, and speech in such a way that new products are created.

In reality, it is not then Mark Zuckerberg himself characterizing how cognitive neuroscience should work on a massive scale, but the audience was defining a new pathway for themselves individually. The subjective nature of individual preferences, feeling and emotions are displayed on social media platforms, as explained in the previous paragraph.

The brain responds differently to social media communications and face-to-face communications. As this blog is about the digital culture I am focussing on the tools or skills required for a digital mind. If we are just going to talk to machines in the future, then might as well, have this conversation now.

There are two aspects of the brain such as the conscious state and the subconscious state of mind. In digital culture, it is the difference between the dry mind and the wet mind part of the brain and how it affects our performance. For example, the Dry mind psychologist will give the computer prime importance, and in fact, is the subject itself.

On the other hand, the dry mind thinker – without any regard for the human brain, which is the wet mind. A balance and understanding of knowledge about the wet mind part that nourishes the human brain. Thus, a brain shifts and with the help of cognitive science on the individual’s part to fix his / her lifestyle. As, we constantly as humans talk to machines.

As I argued in the previous section that – It then becomes for the reader to answer the questions about the skills and tools for digital life. Digital labour is about making decision about how much to replace the dry mind factor and the wet mind factor. Alternativley, how much to integrate both approaches to provide a description about how much time is available for paid work (Broadhurst, 2007, p. 6). As this chapter is about digital labour and online work, then understanding the diffrent approach to an office jobber from 9 to 5pm or working online from home or any other part of the world.

I will now turn to Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. The entrprenurs in San Jose are controlling the information and the responsibility of choices that those individual’s make will affect the labour economies.  

The internet is booming with information and there is “information overload.” The information is free and junk at times.  Not everyone is making money on the internet.

However, money is the only commodity that can fix the problem and remedy the situation. Google, for example is working on intelligent filter technologies to fix the problem of information overload. So, the only way to fix the problem of what is available as free or junk on the internet is to have filtering technological software.

The “cost of choice” is reflected by the google Ad Words campaigns and convenience for the individual when they are on the search engines.  The problem is that apart from the software spying on our computers can result in economic problems.

Because, if money is the only way for filtration; then the technology has to work through common, democratic micro-payment systems.  The second problem is what people are willing to pay or the “cost of choice”? So, people will pay more.

This is because, human beings do not have the time nor abilities, to look beyond initial results on search engines. What is convenient matters, and people are choosing the easiest options.  So, the engineers, software designers and audiences, the users are becoming lazy and transforming the power to the machines (Lanier, 2011, pp. 200-202).

The Human Brain & Computers

If audiences are spending their time looking at computer screens, then the visual regions in the brain are also getting affected.

The brain is interacting with multilayers of the computer in unexpected ways and this can lead to unforeseen damages.  The frontal areas of the brain region and the cortex can be mapped on high level cognitions of the human with a mobile phone, IPad, Laptop. 

The body of the human being is joined with instruments and technological devices that instead of separating from the body is actually becoming part of the body.  At the same time it’s alternating and recreating novel experiences for the individual’s in the world which is based on their own perception.  

The Labour market for job seekers will have to acquire new skills to face these problems in the future, as humans are being replaced by humanoids. The job market in the future will be challenging, and those people who have sensory inputs and mental cognitive abilities to handle machine technology (Broadhurst, 2007, p. 51).

As the consciousness is not of one unified whole, but various microconscious events are programmed.  As the process reverses, there is no final stage in the brain cortex, but a generation of micro consciousness made up of different times and locations around the globe.

The human visual system is capable of both seeing and understanding and it gives us a unified perception, but the machine gets a unified perception of the image.  The concept of the master area of the brain can be refuted as logical and neurological problems arise in the future. This is because it leaves the question who is looking at the image from the master area (Broadhurst, 2007, p. 50).

Cultural Branding

Not too long ago, at least in my life time workers were respected because of their skill, selflessly dedicating their lives to their routine jobs. The worker perused their craft with good humor and dedication. In those days race religion and age did not matter.

The transitions of workers became crucial with identity branding of products. However, cultural branding started at the same time in the US. Iconic brands were usually built by people immersed in the populist world that they draw from.

The brand manager was perceived as genealogist.  So, genealogical mind-set was the managerial’s worldview and that was necessary for the management of identity branding. But that has ended now.  For example Google, Amazon, Ebay are brands that have become iconic in the digital age because of WEB 2.0 technologies.

A short genealogy in the past  would mean: Brand loyalty is the customer’s preference to stay rather than move to its competitor . 

If we speak from New populist world perspective that was prevalent then : where people’s actions are according to their personal beliefs rather than having their actions shaping the society.

It was this populist worlds ideology that provides the raw ingredient how iconic brands got created in the past.

 in the age of computers the contradictions of national ideologies has created myth market because there are acute number of cultural contradictions in  AMERICAN SOCIETY .

When cultural disruptions hit the myth markets they crumble eventually.

Aditionally, to remain iconic – old myths have to be abandoned. As new innovation or revised versions tap into new myth market.

Correspondingly, as the nations ideologies change from SCIENTIFIC BUREAUCRACY TO Technological bureaucracy which is a free agent frontier. Google for example as a brand reinvents its myth to target a new contradiction as the ideologies change from time to time.

Moreover, now myths are reinvented  through alogrymthic designers. The experts are sitting in different parts of the world and they have been called the Lords of Computing Cloud by Lainer.

Likewise, the words are minced into search engine key words on cloud technologies operating from different locations.

Of course, to this end the Computers are lifeless, and the messages transmitted as pure information.

Not only can you lead to mindless chains of anonymous insults which can further lead to articulate controversies.  But also, the World Wide Web and Web 2.0 are refereed to as open culture, but labour is differentiated by skills and capacities of performance.  

Furthurmore, Human ideas are now increasingly becoming software driven.

In the same fashion, the users of such software are required to interact with the computer as if it were a human being. And at the sometime the technology conditions the human brain to act like a computer.

Therefore, when, the developer designs an internet service which can be edited by huge anonymous crowds. The problem is only a   random crowd of human can have a legitimate view point.

Does that make that person an organism?  Because the individual intelligence is different from the crowd pack it leaves a question how can  an artificial person be implanted in each and every individual of the crowd pack? (Lanier, 2011, pp. 4-5).

The future of the labour market requires a lot of soul searching by the makers of the technologies and government regulators. In 2014, Education Secretary Michael Gove  announced every child in primary school in Britian must learn coding.

Having read I now feel that time is moving at the speed of light. I now feel that technology is the driving force towards changing the way how people behave and think? Initially I noticed when you look around how companies are downsizing, merging and de merging with technology.  Subsequently I questioned the changes. Are they   subtle and irreversible? Having read I now feel that computer technology is driving people out of jobs and amplifying change in the job market. Technological change is happening at two distinct levels.  This means that Firstly, more personal portable smaller and cheaper tools are available now and more than ever before.

For me the most significant tools are the Gadgets such as electronic translators, electronic navigation tools, Apple mobile watches and many more.

Secondly   the rise in the availability of cheap, high capacity global communication networks such as satellites, global mobile telephone networks, and increased data transmission capabilities.

Later I realized that these technologies are amplifying massive changes in the labour market and the way society works and moves.
This might be because the major technological entrepreneurs in San Jose are targeting the lifestyle for the new mobile professionals.  This demonstrates that the tools are being provided   for leading a nomadic business life and transforming working life. Having applied I now realize that gradually in space of few years more and more people will be adopting the new lifestyle. This would be because the tools will be available cheaply everywhere for more people to buy. The skill will be useful in understanding mainstream life style option of settling down in a farm will become a thing of the past and people will question their own existence whether they want to be a nomad or a settler.

I have slightly improved my understanding of the communication revolution: wireless communication is becoming the norm. However, there are limitations with the existing digital networks. If this was the case I now wondered how a digital nomad would survive with laptop on the boat.  The problem was figuring out videoconferencing with work colleagues via a laptop connection. Most importantly I learned that Europe can certainly boast for the most advanced GSM wireless networks which is everywhere. But other nations like Japan, USA, China and India are catching up.
I am not confident about other wireless modes such as PHS in Japan , CDMA ( code division multiple access) and TDMA ( Time division multiple access). This understanding is important to me as a digital practitioner to clarify why videoconferencing in 50 countries of Europe and mobile video conferencing will adopt GSM. Later I realized that the problem was that GSM was not reliable and does not guarantee picture quality. If in the future someone on a deckchair on the beach wants to conduct office work from anywhere then a video conferencing app can be downloaded. There may be no problem with the hardware but to make laptops design and to put the electronic hardware with video conferencing for under $1000 is still questionable. The industries manufacturing the laptop are driven by profit so if the demand for number of chips goes up the number of actual chips required to the video conferencing job will go down because the chips get established. In UK, BT in conjunction with Energis is draping its fibre optic cables along the electricity pylons. This is called trunk routing. The problem was how to get trunk cables to people’s homes without digging up the streets? That would be expensive the cheapest alternatives was to use domestic electricity wiring, but with wireless communications. This practise is called local loop and extensively being carried out in INDIA. Having applied I now wonder lowering the charges in the telephone network services in INDIA combined with big increases in carrying capacity. I learned that new opportunities are opening, but people are little wolly about exactly what these opportunities will be for the agricultural farmland labourers. Because,  fruit and veg cannot be reduced to digital form.

IBM, Sun Microsystems, Apple, Sony, Google among others are producing gadgets and technological developments that are stimulating nomadism for only a certain selected groups of people.  The understanding is important to me as a practitioner because it raises a number of questions on equal distribution of good and services or certain pricey gadgets in the hands of the few.

There is no network provider in the world focussing on commercial video conferencing as close to TV screen quality for clarity and high picture quality. However, only the face is required in the frame. The GSM is certainly not geared for higher compression ratio and it is unable to store the full frame but allows fewer bits and so permitting a much lower bit per second carrying rate than video. The only solution for GSM is to use what is called a channel aggregator which is a piece of equipment which glues three to eight GSM channels simultaneously and in this way it is possible to achieve the 1995 uS approved 28,000 bits per sec for a standard video conferencing call and 64000 bit per sec with eight channels.

For me the most relevant issue was about London and why it  is the favourite hot spot of the world and the wireless communication technology is most advanced.

As an example, British Telecom future wireless communication is in optic links. In the future time will move with the speed of light. But the difficulty is that all areas are not benefitting in Britain this is because sending light for wireless communication is more difficult to all areas. Whereas a fixed link communication sends light through  glass fibres.

The other difference is instead of fibre-optic-links in wireless communication the use of “free space optics” allows laser beams to send messages through the ether and its carrying capacity is massive.

It is extremely fast and in a cold country like Britain the code messages travel like using mirrors to reflect sunbeams on a sunny day. With the light communication there is no need for compression because as explained carrying capacity is huge so the reception is instantaneous.

The laser beam is so powerful that the strength of the laser beam from Earth can be reflected on the moon. Such technologies will allow videoconferencing with ease if you’re travelling to Britain (Makimoto & Manners, 1997, pp. 111-114).

Most importantly I have learned that as soon as robust, cheap , ubiquitous, friendly, electronic communication is added to the laptop or mobiles the nomad will benefit the most.

These will be the complete nomadic toolset for those on the mov. , The nomad will feel liberated in spirit has he is no longer tied in small working space. Gone are the days of the use of heavy equipment like fax machines, floppy discs, CD-ROM drives, micro processors , ten thousand floppy disc files. The cloud technologies and portable PSs, the nomad will carry smart slick slimline NC network computers (Makimoto & Manners, 1997, pp. 116-117)Entrepreneurs such as Microsoft, Sun micro system, Apple, Sony and Netscape are toying with NC idea. As the nomads require portability or other Handheld PC H/PC or simply interactive PC (Makimoto & Manners, 1997, pp. 118-120)
